Course Overview

This five-day Environmental Management Systems (EMS) training course provides an in-depth grounding in audit techniques and competencies for the Lead Auditor role. It is registered with the Institute of Sustainability and Environmental Professionals (ISEP) and CQI and IRCA Certified Training.

This course is not only designed to help people carry out value-adding audits, but also to develop a broader understanding of how environmental management systems are developed and implemented.

Participants will learn what level of performance is needed to achieve and maintain a successfully certified EMS, and how to assess an EMS against the ISO 14001:2015 standard.

It also helps participants build essential conceptual skills, including risk-based thinking, continual improvement, life cycle thinking, and process-based approaches.

This course satisfies the formal training requirements for those wishing to register with the ISEP Auditor Registration Scheme and/or the CQI and IRCA Certified Auditing Scheme.

This course is designed to help participants carry out value-adding environmental audits, understand the principles of good Environmental Management, and build their knowledge of the ISO 14001:2015 standard so they can confidently lead an audit team.

It also develops participants’ understanding of different types of environmental audits and the practical skills needed to plan, conduct, and report environmental management audits.

On completion, participants will be able to evaluate the effectiveness of an EMS based on the ISO 14001:2015 standard.

This course meets the training requirement for registration under the CQI and IRCA Certified Auditing Scheme. It is designed for environmental professionals who manage an EMS and internal audits, as well as those involved in corporate, supplier, contractor, or certification auditing, and anyone aiming to build professional-level auditing and environmental skills.

Those attending this course are expected to have prior knowledge of the following:

  • Environmental management principles and concepts, including the Plan–Do–Check–Act (PDCA) cycle
  • Key environmental issues, including environmental protection and pollution prevention and control
  • Common environmental management terms and definitions
  • An appreciation of environmental compliance requirements
  • Typical structures for environmental management systems, including process-based systems
  • The structure, content, and requirements of ISO 14001:2015

This knowledge can be gained through previous experience, completing a CQI and IRCA Certified ISO 14001 training course, or self-study.
