Course Overview

This two-day CQI and IRCA Certified training course gives participants a clear understanding of the principles and techniques required to effectively audit Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OHSMS).

On completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the OHSMS standards relevant to health and safety
  • Understand key terminology related to internal auditing
  • Recognise how standards, legislation, and other requirements apply to the auditing process
  • Explain the main stages of an audit
  • Plan, prepare, communicate, and schedule an internal audit
  • Carry out an effective internal audit
  • Collect, verify, and evaluate audit evidence
  • Prepare clear and accurate audit findings
  • Conduct an effective audit feedback meeting
  • Write and share an audit report 
  • Perform follow-up audit activities

This course, when combined with an OHSMS Foundation Course, meets the formal training requirement for those wishing to register under the CQI and IRCA Certified Training Scheme as an Internal OHSMS Auditor.

This course is ideal for anyone responsible for conducting internal health and safety management system audits, or for those involved in planning, managing, or implementing an internal audit programme. No previous auditing or health and safety management experience is required.Participants are expected to have the following prior knowledge:

  • Knowledge of OHS management system elements and their relationship to the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle
  • A basic knowledge of OHS management systems, including key concepts and principles
  • Familiarity with the terms, definitions, and requirements of the ISO 45001 standard
  • A general awareness of OHS legislation relevant to their area

On successful completion of the course, individuals will receive a CQI and IRCA-accredited training certificate (2337).
