Free learning events are incidents in the workplace that had the potential to cause an accident but ultimately didn’t. These events are also known as ‘safety observations’ or ‘near misses’. We refer to them as free learning events because they are devoid of consequences: no one was injured, there are no insurance claims, fines, or extensive management investigations, and no HSE Fee for Intervention charges.
Such events provide organisations with a valuable opportunity to enhance workplace safety, identify patterns in near misses, and, importantly, take action to prevent future incidents.
